Look at the Walmart theft index!
In June of last year (June 2007), MSN money did a report stating that Walmart theft had gone up totalling almost $ 3 billion a year. This was after Walmart decided to no longer prosecute minor cases of shoplifting in order to focus on organized shoplifting rings.
People tendto forget that the U.S. economy has been in decline for a couple years now, so reports of stolen goods back in '07 is a good indication of how things were then and how bad things have gotten now.
Also, a big change Walmart employees have been noticing is the type of goods stolen. Things like CDs and DVDs are no longer the targeted items. Products like condoms, cold medicine, and food are becoming more popular to steal, maybe because those items are more...necessary for life!
So, if you hear more stories of theft don't be suprised. Until the government does something for its citizens instead of its banks, you can expect citizens to break more laws in order to survive.
