At 5am this morning Main and Broadway was still a blaze. From the Pan Pacific hotel I can still see smoke smothering the skyline.
The story so far is as follows: Last night Kishu Island (a so-so Japanese restaurant) had a small fire in the kitchen which resulted in the ceiling catching on fire. The building was not properly maintained and therefore the restaurant burnt to a crisp really quickly. Carnage from the fire spewed onto the street and collapsed on the restaurant next store, Slickety Jim's Chat-n-Chew (a very popular well liked breakfast joint).
The fire was so bad last night firefighters had to let Kishu burn, but since it burned quicker than expected, they didn't anticipate Slickety Jim's would burn up as well. Unfortunately that was the case.
Slickety Jim's Chat-n-Chew was a East Van institution for as long as I can remember. People used to line up outside for hours just to get in and experience what Jim's had to offer. Considering its really close to Christmas I feel deeply sorry for the owner and the staff of the restaurant. No one anticipated this place would parish and considering the circumstances, suddenly being out of a job so close to the Holiday season sucks big time to say the least.
