20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall and we are still no better then that we were on that fateful date back in 1989.
So, basically back in the day Berlin was the symbol of the East/West divide. The wall separated the two ideologies of capitalism vs. communism and the fall of the wall was the symbolic victory for capitalism or whatever. Nevertheless, 20 years later the powers that be wanted to celebrate this historic event and many were ecstatic that U2 was going to perform a FREE concert for Berliners and the western world.
Now U2 has long been the self-proclaimed band of peace and love and everything that is good, but they have also been known for being total hypocrites (look back to my previous posts on this subject). So U2 came out and put on a free show in Berlin and in order to make sure that people who did not have magical free tickets would not be able to enjoy this event they put up......a freaking wall!
The organizers behind the event (and i'm sure U2 was aware of this) put UP a wall to celebrate the COMING DOWN of a wall!!!!! This sounds like the headline of an Onion article.
Its weird because on one hand I would argue that the putting up of this wall is a blow to to the western capitalistic world and the values they pretend to uphold like free speech, right to assemble and protest and freedom of the press. The wall was supposed to be a symbol to suppress these things and the fall of the wall was supposed to reinstall these values back into the former communist countries.
On the other hand, this is capitalism at its very best. Its a complete facade. Democracy, free press and all that jazz are just euphemisms for what capitalism really stands for...profit. And if that means being completely unethical irrational by putting up a wall in order to celebrate the fall of it, then so be it. Capitalism holds no morals, unless it is profitable to do so. Those who have been the most successful as politicians in the west have emulated this quality perfectly (Ronald Reagan, cough cough) by saying one thing and doing another.
There have been many articles that have dealt with this subject, however, none of them bring up the double standard that the "new" wall represented. I think that is mostly because all of these new sources are owned by multi-national corporations that have financial interests rooted somewhere in the mix and they don't want to jepordize their possible future projected profits.
Once again, not impressed.
