Open studios is a great venue near Main and Terminal where the visuals delight within a two-story black box. Last night was special. Who knew dirty electro and drum and bass could go so well?!
First on the scene was Love and Electrik, a local act from Vancity itself, really kicked it up a notch with disco vocals and synthesized love. Check them out here.
With the playful single, “Sex Video” now available on Beatport.com and coming soon to iTunes, the duo have already been chosen as the opening acts for the likes of Chromeo, Amanda Blank and Devlin & Darko (Spank Rock DJ's). With all this momentum, Love & Electrik aren’t just heading towards any other explosion but instead, a Big Bang! The best part about them is they were humble as apple pie. They were super approachable and almost surprised how much we liked them.
Drum and bass is a sub-genre of electric dance that can either stimulate you with mesmerizing break-beat or give you a head ache.
Let's just say I was mesmerized by Sigma, and wasn't just because he was cute (gotta love those Brits).
Sigma is one of the top new producers in the world of drum-n-bass and he really showed his range last night. His set started at 1am and he didn't quit until half past 3am. Considering it was his first Vancouver premiere, he did not disappoint. Hell he was tantalizing. If you like dirty break beats and are hype to what drum and bass has to offer, check him out without a doubt.
Last but not least gotta give props to Dabbler. He closed the set and just when I thought I was ready he pulls out this re-mix of Nneka's Heartbeat that totally knocked my freaking socks off! Nneka's kinda my latest obsession, but that's another story for another time. So, thanks Dabbler, that's all I wanted to say about that.
