How to say thanks when you're broke and traveling
When traveling and couch surfing there are many ways to say thanks but my favorite way is too cook my hosts a meal. My favorite meal is dinner because its the most social so here is a great recipe full of colors that will please even the pickiest of eaters. Plus, the recipe is easy on the wallet
My famous beet burgers (makes 5-8 burgers)
Ingredients:
- 2 beets (fresh, not canned)
- 1 reasonably sized yam
- 2 eggs (or a can of lentils if you're cooking for vegans)
- a half cup or flour
- garlic (optional)
- onion (as much or as little as you want)
- a dash of corn starch (optional)
- bread crumbs for coating the outside before frying
- Olive or canola oil for frying
2) Put the yam in the microwave and nuke until soft. Carefully take off the skin afterward but don't be afraid to keep some of the skin on, its more nutritious that way.
3) Grab a bowl and dump the shredded beets and the cooked yam and mash them together. Add the onion and chop some garlic and throw it in there as well.
4) Throw in the flour and the corns starch and mash them all together.
5) Lay some bread crumbs on a cutting board in prep for frying the patties.
6) Make small balls out of the mash and coat them with bread crumbs.
7) Drop the mashed balls onto the frying pan (stove should be on med. high) and start frying. The first one or two usually turn out kinda weird so don't get discouraged.
Garnish them with whatever you want and feast your eyes on a wonderful meal. Sharing a meal with friends is one of my most favorite things to do. Hopefully your hosts will be impressed and won't want to kick you out on the street next time you try and sleep on their couch.
