Media matters, but in this day and age it seems to matter less and less. Well, that is if you live in the good ol' US of A. Now, I'm not trying to knock my own country, but their excuse for news is a disgrace, and I do not studder...it is an utter disgrace (i.e. Foxnews, MSNBC, CNN, etc.).
Instead of ranting on about this issue, I want to point to one thing: Euphemisms. Constantly, news anchors, correspondants, and even journalists paint you a picture of a current event that in reality is totally false. I don't know what you would call that, but I call it lying or not telling the truth, but now we call it a euphemism, which makes you sound smarter...or smarterest (I know, I'm awesome).
George Carlin (R.I.P) couldn't have said it better in this clip entitled "soft language," where he states the evoultion of American english ain't tellin' like it is.
Look, even the dictionary definition uses one of Carlin's examples: Euphemism, noun
1.the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.
2.the expression so substituted: “To pass away” is a euphemism for “to die.”
