Now, don't misconstrue what I am trying to tell you, I do love facebook. I love how I can keep in touch with friends all over the world and also be updated on upcoming events, etc. in the area I live in.
But, facebook is not always "the coolest thing ever," and here are several examples of why. (Note: I work in legal education so these examples were first presented by lawyers, no I'm not making this stuff up)
1) Several high school students engage in a weekend of under age drinking. They think they are super cool and post tons of the photos on facebook. As the week goes on some parent finds these pics on facebook (yes, parents have facebook too) and contacts the high school. This high school is private and has strict rules against drinking. They supsend and expell many of the students in the photos, completely messing up their chances at getting into a good university. Opps!
2)Girl gets rear-ended by another car. In court, girl claims she cannot work for x amount of time and the person that hit her should pay for unemployment woes. However, lawyer realizes she has posted several pictures on facebook of her on vacation DURING the time she claimed she was unemployed. She does not get the settlement she wanted and now she is broke as a joke.
So there you have it. The 21st century has a million new ways to screw you over so just consider this a helping hand.
And just a couple of tips for people who should know better:
1) DO NOT post pictures of you doing any drugs (including alcohol if you are under age). Who cares if you smoke pot and why are you stupid enough to flaunt it over the web.
2) Do Not make comments on facebook that could incriminate you. (ex: Photo caption- "This pic is of me right before I dropped acid and drove my car across the border")
3) Would your mother approve? Don't post anything that would make your mother cry and wish you were never born. That one should just be a rule of thumb.
HAPPY FACEBOOKING, Y'ALL!
