One step forward, one step backwards

So, on Wednesday America took a giant step forward by electing the first black president in history. Truly, this is a momentous event that marks a step forward in our fight for equality, an ideal the U.S. was supposed to be founded on.

However, in my home state of California, Proposition 8 - a ban against Gay marriage passed, which brought down my Obama high a bit.

Personally, I'm straight and white but the issue still affects me personally. I believe that everyone regardless of class, character, color or creed should have the right to marry. Some traditionalists say that by allowing Gays to marry we are going against the bible, but it wasn't that long ago that minorities and women were not granted the same rights as others. Now, this second hand treatment is being inflicted on homosexuals all over California.

Many believe that California is a progressive, liberal leaning state but that is not always true. By looking at this graph on the right you can see where the liberals lie (green means voted for the ban, orangish means voted against the ban). You can also click on the graph to get a closer look.

Northern California, most notably San Francisco and the Bay Area remains the most active in voting yes for equality in marriage!

Here is the part that ruffles my feathers. ALL OF THE VOTES HAVE STILL NOT BEEN TALLIED!

As an abroad voter, this upsets me. About 3 million votes have not been tallied and Prop. 8 only won by 400,000 votes anyway.
Studies show that Americans living abroad tend to be more liberal, so these votes should definitely get counted before the final say is said!
