In the midst of the financial crisis and the upcoming 2010 Olympics the Mayor, Gregor Robertson still wants to deliver the goals he made during his campaign and that includes making environmentally sustianability a big priority.
Since being elected in November Mr. Mayor has already legalized chickens (something that many have been wanting for a while) and he is planning on putting in a City Hall garden. Yeah, you heard me right, Mr. Mayor is going to take out the lawn in front of City Hall and replacing it with a garden (click here to learn more).
Last week, I saw him speak a green technologies conference in downtown Vancouver where not only did he mention the creation of a City Hall garden by 2010, he also promised to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world.
Ok, many are thinking, "yeah right, like that is not going to happen," well with an attitude like that it won't. That is why Mr. Mayor needs your help.
Go to the Greenest city website and pitch your ideas on how to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world. You can also e-mail then offering your time to volunteer and be a part of a historical moment in Vancouver's history.
In the midst of a historical financial crisis, I cannot think of a worse time to host the 2010 Olympics, but it's going to happen. Why not show the world that Vancouver, a metropolitan city can acheive both environmental sustainability and Olympic glory without sacrificing jobs or large amounts of money. If we gotta get things done, why not do them the green way (aka the right way).
Haters and cynics should be reminded of a Nelson Mandela quote that says, "Everything seems impossible...until it is done," which basically means stop hating and start doing, the future is in your hands.
