Stewart accussed Cramer of lying, giving bad (if not illegal) financial advice on purpose to everyday citizens, and not asking CEO's the real questions. I mean Cramer is just one man, but he is also suppossed to be reporting the news, so it was quite justified that Stewart get on his case for his lack of information and his indulgence in aesthetics instead of actual content.
So, it's come to this. Comedians like Stewart are actually doing the job of news reporters and Jim Cramer, the closest thing to a celebrity in American financial journalism, just sits there and looks pretty.
Why has America come to this? Why are we sitting back and silently outraged at companies like Bear Sterns, Merril Lynch and AIG instead of putting them on the spot and making them answer the tough questions.
Some haters of Stewart (like Bill O'Rielly) say that the only ones who actually watch The Daily Show are 20-something stoners, but if that is the case, then these 20-something stoners must really appreciate good news programs.
America, where ground-breaking news reporting was created, is now utterly dead. In a land where Edward R. Murrow once exposed Senator McCarthy, and the Watergate story showed the world that everyone is subject to the law and reporters are not afraid to expose them when they do wrong. Yet today, I cannot think of one major U.S. media outlet I believe is credible.
Well, unless you count the Daily Show.
John Stewart said exactly what need to be said to Cramer, and all of America. He said what was on everyone's mind: how could these financial guru's and capitalist masters allowed to pursue their disasterous behaviour unchallenged for so long?
And why weren't we warned about this?
Back in the days of kings and kingdoms, the jestor was the only person in the King's court that could speak the absolute truth to the King. It appears that John Stewart is our modern-day jestor in this modern-day aristocracy called America.
Let's hope that John Stewart's impressive reporting and interviewing skills spread like wildfire across U.S. news networks.
For if it does not, then American media has no hope.
