Ok, I'm not sure if my brand new cellphone is cursed or something but it managed to get water damage twice over. The best part is though with some very helpful tips from friends, family, and the guy who worked at Palm who sat next to me on the plane the phone still works!!!!!
Long story short my sleepyhead dropped my phone into my cup of water and woke up a half hour later wondering why my alarm had not gone off.
Here's what to do if you drop your phone in water and immediately take it out.
1) Turn off the phone and dismantle it, STAT!
2) Do not turn it on for a while. Shake out all the excess water, and do this a couple times throughout the day (do not put hot air in it, it will fry it).
3) There is a gold strip on the inside of the phone where the battery rests. If it turns pink, you might be screwed because your cell provider will definitely not cover it. However, if the strip stays true to its color, you might be in luck for a full recovery.
4) Leave the phone overnight in order to make sure all the water gets out. You can put it back together the next day and hopefully use it sans problems.
So, my story continues. I went back to California later that day to visit family and friends and I placed my dismantled cell and all its pieces on the coffee table. In the morning, I awoke to find it covered in pee.....yes my cat had pissed on my cell phone (thanks Babs)!!!!!!!!!
Here's what to do if an animal pee's on your phone:
1) Dismantle it immediately. The ammonia can do a lot more damage then water so check the copper bits on the battery to make sure they are not rusted. If they are, then your battery is done and you need to buy a new one (but better than buying a new phone).
2) Wipe off the phone and place the entire phone in a bowl of rice (yes, rice). Leave it in there for at least 3 hours and the rice will draw the moisture out of the phone.
3) Gently and carefully wipe the cell with an antibacterial wipe so it doesn't smell like cat piss.
4) Wait a night to turn it on. If there is any liquid in the phone, turning it on will not do any good, at all.
My phone has survived TWO liquid attacks and it's still working (knock on wood) so take this advice before trying anything else.
