Why are Europeans white? Sunlight not the only answer!

This is a question I have been wondering for a long time, what makes Europeans so light, or de-pigmented?

I thought I had this question answered because many theories state that since humans do not have fur, the closer they are located to the equator, the darker the skin tone. However, this explanation does not properly explain why Europeans have such light colored skin.

Well, my curiosity is answered (thank you Reddit).

Knol, somehow related to google (isn't everything?)j, is still in its beta stages is another wikipedia type thing and they are trying to take a new approach to rapid communication of research, results and ideas. Several know-it-alls have banded together to examine why Europeans are white and this article is amazing.

The article is super user-friendly, broken down into easy-to-read chapters, charts, graphs, and even aestetically pleasing photos that aid in explaining the theory.

Ok, back to why are Europeans so freakishly white. It's because....Haha, you think i'd tell you? No, I'm going to make you READ IT YOURSELF. But don't fret, its seriously one of the most interesting articles i've read in a while.
