Vancouver's changing pedestrian etiquette

For a city, Vancouver doesn't feel like one and that's what I always liked about it.
When I first arrived I found the average Vancouverite helpful and friendly, something I was not accustomed to.
I hail from the Bay Area and always found people from San Francisco really cold towards tourists and commoners in general. It's like everyone who lives there thinks they are the cat's pajamas so they act rude to outsiders.

Before I came to Vancouver 6 years ago I spent a couple weeks in New York and the one of the most notable things I observed was pedestrian etiquette. There are simply too many people in NYC therefore when you cross a street you are bound to bump into a few folks as you frolic by.

This was never the case in Vancouver. It is actually more common if you trip someone crossing the street they are more likely to say sorry first. So, it came as a shock that when I was walking up Robson many people bumped into me without so much as an "excuse me" or "sorry" (Canadian equivalent to excuse me). These bump-in encounters continued throughout the day and I was at a loss for words for what to think.
I was secretly hoping that everyone that bumped me was a tourist, but maybe the attitudes of Vancouverites are changing too?! Perhaps they will turn into snotty San Franciscans who think they are so hip they can't bother to stop and smile once in a while. I really hope that's not the case, I moved away from SF for a reason (although you'll always have my heart ;-).

Now, I know that Robson st. is the main st for Olympic madness but this type of behavior is so NOT Vancouver, it's like the city has transformed into a mini-New York overnight.

I'm hoping this transformed pedestrian etiquette will change back after the Olympics because this is not the Vancouver I know. I want my small-town mentality back in Vancouver.

Maybe i'm just bitching for no reason, but hey this is the place to do it, right?!
