They came, they played and they were scrumptious.
My dear friend introduced me to this band, Plants and Animals, while I was in Montreal, and I instantly fell in love with their album, Parc Avenue. It had been a while where you could just put on an album, press play, and let it take you away.
Parc avenue basically defined my summer and I was itching to see them live ever since I heard them at a hookah bar in the Plateau, Montreal. They had played last year at the Railway Club and the Builtmore and I heard mixed reviews. I didn't care though I knew that when I saw them they would deliver...and they did!
They played a solid mix of their old album Parc avenue mixed in with several songs from their new, self-titled album. They were a little helter skelter, but they kept a solid beat and serenaded me through and through.
The show they played was similar to the experience I had with their Parc avenue album. From the second they started playing I was glued to their sound. Sweaty and swaggering, they did more than justice to their instruments and kept my spirits high and my body swaying.
The only things I didn't like about the show had nothing to do with the band and more to do with the ambiance.
1) I hate the Commodore. I love their acoustics and their space but their management and conduct policies suck big time. Two paying customers decided to jump on stage and the security jumped on them like they were terrorists with Molotov cocktails. The band pleaded that they stay on stage but security wasn't havin' it.
2) The crowd lacked enthusiasm. As a concert goer I don't expect you to know every single word to every song, but at least look like you are happy being there. The crowd was more like a group of lost kids, ambling around, trying to find their mommy. They all stood there, barely moving with indifference stricken all over their faces. My friends and I were having none of that and we rocked out supremely with smiles nonetheless.
The band says label themselves as indie, and if that is the case then this is what I want all indie music to sound like.
Thanks, Plants and Animals, you didn't disappoint me. I'm just sorry if the whack venue and ho-hum crowd displeased you.
