A while back I got all agro about Vancouver claiming to be the greenest city in the world when they had one of the worst city-wide recycling programs I've seen. So, instead of yelling at them in person I wrote the Waste Management branch and gave them my two cents. In the letter I strongly encouraged they take on a city-wide composting service like Toronto. I was expecting to get ignored but on the contrary, I received a detailed response that said they were "working on it."
I never expected them to be serious....but they were as serious as a heart attack.
On Earth Day, April 22nd, Vancouver started the first phase of their city-wide composting service.
The Georgia Straight is reporting that they will evolve the system but here's what you can do now, and its stupidly easy:
In Phase 1, those who live in single-family residences will be able to put tea bags, uncooked fruit and vegetable bits, eggshells, and coffee grounds and filters into their yard-trimmings cart, which will be picked up biweekly for processing by Fraser Richmond Soil & Fibre.
Read the article linked above to find out how they are going to go about phases 2 through 3 or just do what I say and leave it at that.
When politicians actually DO what they say its like seeing a tiny light at the end of a scary, long tunnel. Thanks Vancity for quelling my cynicism.
