Healthy ingredient substitutions

In this day and age everything we eat seems to be bad for us, especially things that taste good.
I've always tried to take recipes and make them healthier and here are a few tips in how to do so. You will be surprised how great these substitutions are, and how great they are for you.
I know I sound like a square, but being healthy never goes out of style.

General guidelines for:

FAT:For baked goods, use half the butter, shortening or oil and replace the other half with unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana.

SUGAR: Most of the time you can reduce a recipe's amount of sugar by one-third to one-half. After doing that add spices such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg or flavors such as vanilla extract or almond flavoring to enhance the sweetness.

SODIUM: This one is hard for me because I love my salt. For most main dishes, salads, soups and other foods, you can reduce the salt by one-half or eliminate it completely. You can try Bragg's Fluid Aminos, it's really tasty and is a better alternative than salt or soy sauce. However, this does not apply to recipes that require yeast though, stick to the required amount specified.
